Acne Adventures

About a month ago, I noticed that my dire skin situation was getting dire-rer. I had no idea why, I was being really good with the whole yoga breathing, eating lots of fruit, using my Shu Uemura balancing oil cleanser... but it was just getting worse. It really sort of died when Priscilla came for a visit - I'm guessing the extreme excitement just pushed it over the edge.

So I was ready to jump back on the whole oral + topical medication bandwagon - my drug of choice lately has been the pill Diane 35 and a combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin.

But then Priscilla was all like - you should try Aesop products, it's awesome, it might work for you, it worked for me...

The thing is my dermatologist is of the opinion that no matter what cleanser/lotion you use, its all going to be the same because you're just the kind of person who gets acne. He doesn't exactly say all these things he just kind of isn't very helpful when I ask for suggestions about products I should be using. The most I've ever got out of him was, you can use Cetaphil if you like. It's a good product. Well thank you FOR NOTHING.

Anyway I decided to check out Kens Apothecary in Empire Subang and the SA there, Marznum was actually incredibly helpful.

She was not too excited about me wanting to get Aesop products because she was all like, it's not for acne! It's just for daily upkeep! You need acne fighting products. So she recommended Dr Brandt's Blemish Control products. Initially I wasn't sold because I mean, look at the guy, he doesn't exactly inspire confidence:

He looks CRAZY.

Anyway she was pretty convincing so I thought that I would try it so I bought the Blemishes No More To Go pack so I could try the whole system.

Since the pack comes with cleansing pads instead of an actual cleanser she suggested that I could try Eucerin's gentle cleanser because Neutrogena, what I was using, was way too "soapy" and that that was bad for acne. Okay... anyway I listened to her and got the Eucerin cleanser.

At this point she'd figured out that I would probably buy anything she recommended so she suggested the Aesop Chamomile Concentrate Mask. Which I also bought.

I started using the cleanser and Dr Brandt system immediately, along with Dalacin-T as a topical treatment. Within a week the intense cystic acne I had going on calmed down considerably. Now I can't say whether this was due to the Dr Brandt system or the Dalacin-T, but I'm willing to bet it's a combination of the two.

With that kind of success I went ahead and bought the full sized bottle of Dr Brandt's Blemishes No More Intensolution and the Oil Free Hydrator.

It's one month later and I'm happy that I made the decision to keep going on with the Dr Brandt products. Everything has really calmed down and its really clearing up. Still I am getting new, smaller spots so last week I also started on Mercilon as an oral treatment. Overall I'm glad that I'm using this stuff, even though it's definitely burning a hole in my pocket. The Aesop Mask is ok, I can't quite figure out if it's awesome or totally useless. It makes my face super matte for about an hour after I use it and then its kind of back to normal. It smells good though!

Dr Brandt stuff is super expensive in Kens Apothecary here so I've started buying the Intensolution from StrawberryNet since it's literally RM70 cheaper which is ridiculous. I haven't figured out where to get the hydrator cheaper but I'm working on it! I also splurged on the Dr Brandt sunscreen from Strawberry Net this week. I should get it next week so I'll do an update then.

Other than that I bought Laura Mercier Gentle Eye Makeup Remover from Kens Apothecary which was just useless - Lancome kicks its ass

and Marznum gave me this sample of Dr Brandt concealer which was also TERRIBLE. It was a terrible ashy gray color and could not conceal anything.

Oh yeah and Marznum told me to stop using Shu Uemura's Cleansing Oil because it clogs pores and guess what? It totally does. So sad. It cost me like RM99. Good thing I didn't buy the big bottle.

From Hong Kong to Malaysia... with love

Long overdue I know, SO Cilla came to Malaysia on the 31st of December to the 2nd of January. This was prompted because she felt she had to get out of Hong Kong and also because she couldn't come see me during Chinese New Year because it was too expensive. All very good reasons.

Her itinerary was as follows:

Day One:

1:00pm Land in KLIA Airport
2:00pm Eat my mom's food (Fish curry, okra, rice and fried chicken)
4:00pm Go to Carrefour with me to buy groceries for BBQ
6:30pm Barbecue for New Years with my workmates
2:00pm Sleep

Day Two:
9:00am Breakfast at home
10:00am Skype with Katie in Ottawa!
12:00pm Shopping (really I would say the highlight)
7:00pm Dinner at Fatty Crab - consisted of Crab and Fried Chicken
9:30pm Dessert at KTZ

Day Three:
9:00am Breakfast at home
11:00am Dosa and Roti Canai for 2nd breakfast
12:00pm Pedicures at Creative in Subang Parade!
2:00pm Lunch at home (Chicken curry, eggplant and rice)
4:00pm Drop Cilla off at the airport

The most important part of the entire trip? The shopping.

Cilla's Loot

Here's what she got (All pictured above):
Black dress from Topshop - Very short with long sleeves, very seventies, about RM270
Long dusty lilac top from Topshop for clubbing, on sale about RM80
Really gorgeous black sandals with embedded clear stones, about RM200
Sheer long top with gold work from Guess, about RM200
Black flats with studs from Vincci+, about RM150
Sexy formfitting white dress from Dressing Paula, about RM100
Red sweater from Dressing Paula, about RM100
Long silver evening dress with gold detail from Eclipse, about RM 270

Since Cilla was a bit possessed by the shopping devil, I gave in and shopped a little myself.

Super cute flats from Cotton On, RM69.90 for both. Unfortunately I can't wear them to work because they have no arch support so my back kills me by the end of the day. It's ok for quick dinners though!

Lovely silk skirt from MANGO which was RM99. I love it because it really gives me the look and silhouette I've been going for lately - the whole full 50's skirt thing.

As my Christmas present, Cilla also treated me to a lovely pedicure at Creative Nail Salon. The girls were really nice and the place was nice too. Only thing is the scrub kind of really stung!

Here's the color. Isn't it fab? Please excuse the veins in my foot. Apparently it's a good thing.

Katie had sent me the most awesome underwear, ear-rings and makeup pouches. Below I have pictures of the undies and pouches.

The smaller pouch is already my everyday make-up pouch as you can see. Oil blotters, TheBalm concealer and Burt's Bees lip balm, which I am TOTALLY allergic too btw. It's so tragic, I'm a makeup addict who is allergic to all lip products.

It was an awesome visit from Priscilla - only thing that would have made it better would have been having Katie there! We missed you!

Strawberry Net DELIVERS!

Priscilla came to visit me this past weekend and I'm going to do a huge post about all the stuff she and I, but mostly just she, bought. Since it's going to take me FOREVER, I figured I'd do this quick post about this Benefit Eyeshadow I got from StrawberryNet.

Right before Christmas StrawberryNet had these crazy discounts on a bunch of their products. I was just browsing one day when I found that they had a bunch of the Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liners for 50% off at RM30, which was BANANAS. They are constantly reviewed as one of the best Cream Eyeshadows on the market so I knew it was a good deal.

I had a huge internal struggle before I just caved and bought one. Only one. One measly one. Which I'm starting to think is a bad idea. In any case I got the color "Get Figgy" which is a mauve/purple/taupe color, I'm going to take it for a spin tomorrow and I'll let you know about it's no creasing claims.

Enjoy the pictures!

P.S. I'm obsessed with the packaging and the fact that it comes in this really hefty glass container. Also StrawberryNet shipping is free. And it takes forever to ship. But WHO cares... when it's free.
